OVERVIEW
Since its establishment in 1960, Chadstone Shopping Centre has prided itself on being the Fashion Capital and Australia’s premier retail destination.
Chadstone plays an important role as a focus of community activity, services and investment, and values the support of its local residents in its plans for future growth.
In October 2011 a new planning proposal was lodged with the City of Stonnington. The new development proposal represents an investment of over $500 million by its owners, creating significant employment throughout the economy for the broader community (2,700 direct jobs during construction and 2,200 ongoing).
The development proposal includes:
- A new leisure & entertainment precinct
- A state-of-the-art digital cinema complex
- New dining precinct
- Additional commercial offices
- Hotel accommodation
- New local public transport facilities
- Improved access to the centre
- More car parking
PLANNING
In order for a proposed development to commence it requires planning approval. The development will consist of 2 planning stages:
Stage 1: Proposed planning scheme amendment
- This involves changes to the planning controls for the centre
- It allows consideration of the permit application proposed in Stage 2
- The changes include a modified “building envelope” for the centre, an increase in shop floor cap and removal of the existing Chadstone Road curfew
Stage 2: Future planning permit application
- This involves a planning permit application for new retail shops, dining areas and a cinema complex in the northern part of the centre (near Target), and a new office building and accommodation hotel fronting Princes Highway.
- It also includes the enhancement of local public transport facilities with a new centralised bus interchange, and additional car parking
*The Future Planning Permit is dependent on the approval of Stage 1.
The proposed planning scheme amendment is on public exhibition from Thursday January 19, 2012 – Wednesday February 29, 2012.
INFORMATION PACK
An information package has been compiled which outlines the planning controls, the proposal, and an ‘indicative development concept’ showing what the future planning application will look like. The pack also includes information on the proposed transport and access improvements, additional car parking areas and the Chadstone Road curfew. The process for community consultation is also explained and the ways that residents can have their say on the proposal.
